The World Wide Web (the Web) is a system of interlinked HTML documents. The documents can contain client side scripting or interact with the server, these are called web applications. An Operating System (OS) is the software on a computer that manages activities and the sharing of resources. An OS runs the programs, so to speak. The Web Operating System can either be seen as the operating system running a network of computers (hardware) the scale of the Web, or running the Web itself. I would call either one of these a GRID.

THE FIRST APPLICATION
One of the applications of a WebOS is an intelligent (personal) agent. This intelligent agent is smart enough to ‘wander around’ in this giant operating system, looking for resources that are of interest. But what would be the problem requiring this incredibly complex architecture? I have no idea, yet.

IS SCIENCE FICTION TO ME
To me this sounds too much like a science fiction dream. ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could have these personal agents that could get answers for us to the questions we didn’t even know we had?!’ But what would be the answers/problems next generation internet/web could help us solve?

IF NOT AN AGENT THAN WHAT?
If we follow the path of mobility and digitalization (miniturization of computing) we will get devices that are much more capable than before. As a consumer product its main use is being a telephone. But, as already predicted, these devices could be much smarter and much more useful if they would be connected. But connected to what?

PERHAPS GRIDS OF PURPOSE
I doubt it if the next big thing will be ‘wandering agents’ in this ‘cloud’ that used to be called the internet. But it is too easy to be against something. I think we will have devices part of a grid of purpose. A TomTom is part of a ‘grid of transport’. At home I have a monitoring device that is part of the health grid operated by y insurance company. My cellphone and my laptop are also part of an entertainment grid. But I am repeating myself here!
