Please help me out here with this reasoning: I requested a subsidy to install about 14 sun-panels on my roof. Costs are approximately 1.000 euro a screen and 2.000 euro installation cost, so 16k in total. I was granted a subsidy which provides me with a kick-back on every unit of energy the screen delivers. The calculation (average sun hours x screen-efficiency (approx 15%) - 1% efficiency per year for deterioration) shows that in 10-15 years I have earned the screens back and I have free energy which is about 20% of my household. So I felt good… financially wise and full of good for the world vibrations untill I woke up this morning……

If I earn the screens back in 10 years I have another 10 years I can use them before they are obsolete. That will earn me about 10k euro’s in 20 year… yeah, but if I put the purchasing cost + installment on a bank-account for 20 years  with 3% interest, I would earn the same (if my bank is not going bankrupt). Bummer… in addition the calculation is done without any accuracy. The efficiency is when in the right spot (south) under the right angle (35 degrees). My roof is ofcourse not perfect… so I will never make the perfect-calculation model… the purchasing costs will remain the same, but the power-saving and thus the subsidy will be less! In addition, this technology is five years old, what is the chance that size of the screens will decrease and that performance will more than double (anybody got a Moore’s Law of Solar?). So I probably will have to replace the screens before 20 years. OK, so finance is not the reason.. climate change is! But what I thought when I woke up this morning… I already have ‘NatuurStroom’ from the Nuon: “Groene stroom is groene stroom, zou je zeggen. Maar er is een verschil. Zo wordt Nuon NatuurStroom volledig opgewekt uit zon, wind en water. Biomassa, zoals plantenafval en houtsnippers, komt er niet aan te pas.“. So if I’m right, I’m encouraged to install sunscreens to save power that was generated with solar on the first place… souns kind of rediculous… So now I have got a subsidy, I have got an installer waiting for my call… But why, why should one install solar-power?

Reading your overnight thought I see no reason to install solar panels on your roof. By the way they look ugly when installed. However every neighbour can see that you are into solar energy and therefore working on improving the climate change. So your image in the neighbourhood could be an option to install them :)

Well if it is just about status… than buy me some fake solar panels Robbie! :) :)

The great advantage is that you are no longer have to depend on the energy companies. Rising energy prices won’t affect you (if the prices rise, your callucation will change as well.)

But the real question is: how much energy does it cost to make a solar panel? Does the energy requirements for fabrication of the solar panel outweigh the energy you will receive in the future?

By the way, have you considered maintenance costs and what exactly is the lifespan of a solarcell? Is it really 20 years?

Unfortunately, the subsidy is limited so for the first 10 years I have to pay the rising prices… so only after 10 yearts this could be an advantage… but Nuon is also offering me ways to fix the max amount… and if solar really break through in 10 years… will prices still be like the high-level of today??? who knows =)

The truth about solar in the Netherlands,

From day one solar energy is cheaper than buying energy from energy firms.

Fact one:
The mortgage coast for a solar installation is the same as the energy costs that it produces. So if you’re paying 100 euro a month at your energy bill now you’re paying 100 euro a month to your bank. The difference between these 2 is that the bank is asking 10 or 20 years the same amount and your energy bill is rising 6 to 12% a year.

Tact two:
In the Netherlands you can make your mortgage 100% interest. (spaarhypotheek). The interest can be pulled of off you salary. This means that the 100 euro from the bank is net between 65 and 48 euro. (Depending how mach you’re earning.)
So the balance is: 100 euro energy bill and let say 48 bank.

Fact tree:
If were producing this kind of solar energy our government is giving us 100 euro a month as help. (0,33 eurocent government 0,21 eurocent producing, 3.500 Wp)
So the balance is: 100 euro energy bill and 48 – 100 euro = -52 euro a month.

Fact four:
If you wane sit warm you built a home that lasts a lifetime. Because the coasts for this are high you go to the bank and take a mortgage. With solar energy it is the same. You’re wane have electrical energy, your buying it for a lifetime. You go to the bank and take a mortgage. The investment in your home will rise over 30 years. The repayment on your solar investment will be the same after 30 years.

Every moron that speaks about ROI (return off investment) doesn’t understand how things work. ROI is for products with a short life cycle. Solar solarmoduls have a warranty time for 30 years. PLEAS tell me if your knowing someone that can tell me his ROI for his garage door ore bricks that are in the wall.

Fact five:
There are over 9.000 people in the Netherlands that have made the decision and filled in the letters that give the support from our government. Those people don’t pay 100 euros in the month there getting 52 euros. The difference is 152 euros.

SOLAR ENERGIE IS CHEAPER THAN YOUR ENERGY BILL.
