acrobat_remote_control.jpgAfter yet another restless attempt to watch something decent on television, and flipping dozens of channels, I turned to the Internet for some satisfacting. After browsing ten’s of online video portal and peer-to-peer on demand video channels, and becomming increasingly restless I just wondered: what would a television-navigator look like? What is the brandname that filters the millions of pieces of content to my personal satisfaction, and is there such a thing even possible?

There is a vast amount of television content produced in the world by both professionals and amateurs. The navigators act as a filter in this vast amount of content by selecting the content that is presented to their target audience. Traditionally, television broadcasting is expensive, it has limited air-time and space to transmit, so in search of profitability it became commercial and in search of reaching the highest amount of viewers. In commercial television there is no need for educating the public, or in adressing minorities and sub-culture. But the search for the highest amount of viewers also results in dozens of similair, somewhat optimezed formats.

Since taste is divers and changing. The adressing of the popular group is not satisfactory to all and not all the time. But looking for an alternative poses another problem. The online alternative of watching televsion is not a very attractive option neither since a vast amount of content is availible that you yourself have to sift through. It is like flipping channels, only there now are millions in stead of dozens. I know few people who “YouTube” for fun. YouTube is an active process; every couple of minutes an interaction is required. So where is the navigator that lets me enjoy watching some content for an hour or so?

I wonder wheteher there is something possible that programs video-content to my personal choice. I know there are counterparts in music and listen to names like LastFM and Pandora. These parties analyaze and categorize millions of musical tracks. Once a starting point in music is selected, something that suits your mood, pretty good variations and suggestions are created by the system. Also, the music is played as a carousel, it only stops on an interaction. To me, the logic of such a system has become the navigator. I sit down and listen while getting presented what suits my taste. I don’t think there is a counterpart that deals with hand-picked content.
