One could wonder if this shift from niche to mainstream for gaming is actually a good thing or drag games down in general just like the average movie coming from Hollywood is a dumbed down story so the masses can enjoy it. Over the past years the cost of developing games has increased tremendously so it is much harder for smaller new game developers to keep their heads above water and produce innovative games. I assume such problems will work themselves out since most would probably want easier/shinier/more games while they will still enjoy games more which challenge them, so the good games will always be more successful.
