Japanese scientists have managed to clone mice which had been frozen for 16 years. When mammals are frozen their cells burst, which has kept scientists from using frozen tissue to clone mammals. Cells can be kept from bursting by applying certain chemicals before they are frozen, so this does not help with anything frozen without this chemical. The cells that have burst can cause the DNA inside to become damaged.

Cloning from frozen mammals could enable us to clone mammoths for example or other extinct animals. Micheal Crichton, who recently died, might not have been so far off with his Jurassic Park. A number of mammoths has been found frozen in ice, the scientists have found out that using brain cells work best for frozen mice, they do however not know why exactly. It does remain a challenge to bring back any extinct animal since there are not living cells available and the genomic material is most likely degraded.
Now let’s hope some mad scientist will start experimenting on an isolated island somewhere in the pacific in the hope of creating a theme park full of dinosaurs!
