Japanese scientists have managed to clone mice which had been frozen for 16 years. When mammals are frozen their cells burst, which has kept scientists from using frozen tissue to clone mammals. Cells can be kept from bursting by applying certain chemicals before they are frozen, so this does not help with anything frozen without this chemical. The cells that have burst can cause the DNA inside to become damaged.

Recently a video game archive was opened in the United Kingdom not only to store old video games but also to preserve video gaming culture. The project is a partnership between a university and National Media Museum in Bradford which will also be housing the gathered pieces.

I don’t mean Internet in the sense of a global network which can connect every person, but a market completely based on open standards and supported by open source software, of which no entity has complete control. Every company will be able to compete in such a market and the users would not be locked into any certain companies technology.

The RepRap (= Replicating Rapid-prototyping) is like a 3 dimensional printer, instead of printing ink on paper it actually creates 3D objects. The current version of the RepRap is capable of creating objects out of plastics only (such as Polycarbonate or Polypropylene) but future versions are planned to be able to use multiple materials to print even more complex objects and assemble them into a finished product.

The university of Washington has released a game in which users can fold proteins and help researchers better understand proteins and perhaps find cures for HIV/AIDS, cancer, Alzheimer’s or help develop better processes to turn plants into biofuel.

They decided to do this in response to a governments and government organizations demanding the use of open standard office documents, which would exclude Microsoft Office as it uses its own proprietary document format.
